Vernon Parish School Board - Lake Charles, La. (KPLC) - The Vernon Parish School Board has recognized its Teachers of the Year for the 2019 - 2020 school year.
Teachers of the Year are selected by their peers and are selected based on demonstrating excellence in their field, guiding students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence, having a positive impact on student achievement, and demonstrating leadership among their peers.

"Our community is extremely fortunate to have such a diverse array of dedicated teachers teaching our students," Fort Polk Progress Chairman Mike Reese said of the recipients.

Jessica Deon has been named first grade teacher of the year at Rosepine Elementary. She has been a teacher for 15 years and currently teaches fifth grade science and social studies. As a retired Navy veteran, Dion wanted to teach in the military since his childhood experiences gave him a unique perspective that he says can help military-related students.
Asked why he became a teacher, he said: "I have always been motivated to teach students. I certainly did not hesitate to join this job, even when I was young."
Sabri Gomez was named Middle School Teacher of the Year from Rosepine High School. She has been a teacher for 8 years and is currently an 8th grade English teacher.
Gomez says that education and literature have always been her passion, "Books have always been an escape and opened doors to others and their worlds that I would never have otherwise." "My goal is to help students open that 'door' and realize that there is more to life than what they encounter at home or in their lives," she says.

Rhonda Hampton has been named High School Teacher of the Year from Simpson High School. She has been a teacher at Simpson High School for 23 years, 22 years and is currently a science teacher.
Hampton said she became a teacher because she wanted to share her love of science with her students to encourage them to pursue their career dreams in science.
